I would like to comment on principle #3: Make it fun. I do not have a lot of free time for “formal” training or play sessions so I decided to focus on this principle to help make the most of the time I do have with my dogs. Kathy, it was amazing! I had tons of housework to do and I invited my dogs to join up with me in my work. Suddenly, stripping the linens off a bunch of beds became a fabulous opportunity to practice skills like pull (tug the sheet off the bed with me) take it (take the end of the sheet I am offering and “help” me carry it downstairs) Give/out (give me the part of the sheet you are holding) etc. Before we knew it, that task was completed, and we were racing around the house looking for other jobs we could do together. We had a lot of fun practicing our teamwork and working together to achieve a goal. I strongly encourage everyone to try some out-of-the-box ways to have fun with your dog – you can accomplish so much more though fun, games, and training puzzles than you can in overly intense goal-oriented training sessions. Thank you Kathy for giving Ozzie, Kayleigh, and me such a valuable lesson!
